Vanilla Beans

With coffee, the traditional crop for this region, bringing very poor returns, the Katoke Trust introduced vanilla to the impoverished farmers in this rural area. The farmers now have a cash crop to supplement their incomes.

Palm Oil

A trial planting of an improved variety of palm oil is being conducted in three plots in Kahumulo village near Katoke. The plants were obtained from the Jane Goodall Institute at Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika. Growth of the first plot in the two years since planting has been very pleasing but the oil bearing seeds are not expected to begin until the fourth year.
