Katoke-Lweru Secondary School now has a computer laboratory, which will put students in touch with the wider world. The laboratory was opened in July by the Regional Commissioner in Kagera, the Honourable Muhamed Babu.

The laboratory has 25 new computers, printers and a data projector. It connects students in this remote rural school in the Kagera region of Tanzania with international communication and information technology. Staff and students are very excited about using computers, said Dr Alan Watson, chairman of the Katoke Trust. He says knowledge gained through computer use will benefit the whole community, not just students. Computers will be used in all areas of the school curriculum, and encourage learning through software.

Our Aim

To make a sustained, multi-pronged attack on poverty in the Katoke area of Tanzania.

Mission Statement

To help a community caught in the poverty trap of subsistence living get onto the bottom rung of the development ladder in order that they themselves can take charge of, and continue, their own development.

Working Together

Long term links with Katoke, which were begun by Australians in the 1920s, have been built upon in current relationships with the local leaders. The Trust is a Christian organisation that provides aid for people irrespective of their race, colour or religion. Since the Trust began, members have made regular self-funded visits twice a year to ensure a flexible approach to aid delivery and close personal supervision of financial and management processes.

The Future

A major part of our work is to develop strong local leadership that will be able to take initiative and ensure sustainability of projects and the wider developmental momentum.

In this regard the Katoke Lweru Secondary School is a vital long-term investment for the nurture of local leadership.

The Katoke Trust is a small, voluntary, grass-roots organisation with some big goals. We are making a sustained, multi-pronged attack on poverty in the Katoke area of Tanzania. Our activities have three themes; Educate, Care, Grow.

Our belief is that the central way to secure long-term development is by education, and this has been the major emphasis of our work. Without education, the poverty cycle cannot be broken. Read about The Katoke-Lweru Secondary School.

The Katoke Trust for Overseas Aid was founded in 1998 by Dr Alan Watson. As president of the Trust Alan has overseen the provision of educational, medical and agricultural development assistance. His work for the third world was recognized in 2002 with the award of the International Citation of Merit by the International Reading Association – the only occasion in which this award has been given to an Australian.

Watson has built up a dedicated group of volunteers to work with him towards achieving the vision of the Katoke Trust. Being a small, grass-roots organization, virtually 100% of the money raised through donations goes straight back into the community projects that the Katoke Trust support.
